The Silver Linings Playbook Chapter 34 Free Essays
Letter #5-December 3, 2006 Dear Nikki, The night after the Tennessee Titans destroyed the Eagles on their home turf ââ¬â a game in which Donovan McNabb tore his ACL, ending his season and maybe even his career ââ¬â Andre Waters shot himself to death. I realize you donââ¬â¢t care about any of this, but Waters was one of my favorite players back when I was a teenager. He was a big part of the Gang Green Defense. We will write a custom essay sample on The Silver Linings Playbook Chapter 34 or any similar topic only for you Order Now People called him Dirty Waters because he was fined so much for hitting too hard. And when I was a kid, Waters was a god to me. Jake says Waters probably killed himself after watching the Eagles play so poorly against the Titans, which was not a funny thing to say at all. My father is not talking to anyone, because he is upset about McNabbââ¬â¢s injury, which will most likely ruin the Eaglesââ¬â¢ chances of making the play-offs. My new favorite player, Hank Baskett, is not getting many balls thrown to him anymore, but he actually threw an interception during a stupid trick play during the Indy Coltsââ¬â¢ win over the Birds just this past weekend. And of course, there was also your last letter. So Iââ¬â¢m thinking this is the part of my movie where things appear as if nothing is going to work out. I have to remind myself that all movie characters go through this sort of dark period before they find their happy ending. It was hard to wait two weeks for your reply. Your letter made me very sad, and in the past twenty-four hours I have written my reply at least a hundred times. I donââ¬â¢t know if Tiffany read you the part of my memoir where I described my therapistââ¬â¢s office, but he has two leather recliners ââ¬â one black, one brown. My therapist lets his patients choose which seat they want to sit in just so he can see what type of mood we are in. Iââ¬â¢ve been picking the black one lately. Iââ¬â¢ve read certain parts of your letters to Cliff ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s my therapistââ¬â¢s name. He doesnââ¬â¢t know about Tiffanyââ¬â¢s involvement, because I promised her that I would not tell anyone that she has agreed to act as our liaison. When Cliff asked how I was able to make contact with you, I refused to answer. I hope that you donââ¬â¢t mind my reading some of your words to my therapist. Itââ¬â¢s funny. Cliff keeps hinting that I should pursue a relationship with Tiffany. And I know Tiffany is reading this letter to you, so this part will be awkward for everyone involved, but Tiffany will just have to deal with it because this is what being a liaison requires, and I already danced so well, fulfilling my end of the bargain. Cliff says that Tiffany and I have a lot in common at this point and that you and I have very little in common, because we are in very different places. I thought he meant that you were in Maryland and I was in New Jersey, but it turns out he means that I am still fighting to regain my mental health, and you are mentally stable. I asked Cliff why he would want me to pursue a relationship with someone who is as mentally unstable as me, and he said that you were not able to support me in the way I needed to be supported, which is why our marriage failed. I got very mad at Cliff when he said that, especially since I am the one to blame, but he insisted that you allowed me to become the person I was by enabling me ââ¬â never putting me in my place and allowing me to emotionally abuse you for so long. He says that Tiffany will not allow me to do this and that our friendship is based on a mutual need and a commitment to bettering ourselves through physical fitness and dance. Tiffany and I are great friends, and I appreciate all that she is doing for me now. But she is not you. I still love you, Nikki. And you canââ¬â¢t control or alter true love. Mom checked out The Catcher in the Rye from the Collingswood Public Library. I liked Holden Caulfield very much and felt a lot of sympathy for him because he really was a nice guy, always trying to do right by his sister Phoebe, yet always failing, like when he bought that record for Phoebe and broke it before he could give it to her. I also liked how he was always so worried about what the NYC ducks do in winter. Where do they go? But my favorite part was the ending, when Holden takes his sister to the carousel and she rides on the horse and tries to reach for the gold ring. Holden says, ââ¬Å"I was sort of afraid sheââ¬â¢d fall off the goddamn horse, but I didnââ¬â¢t say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but itââ¬â¢s bad if you say anything to them.â⬠When I read this, I thought about your writing that I was in my second childhood and that I would have to ââ¬Å"leave the basementâ⬠someday. But then I thought about how my improving myself and learning how to dance with Tiffany was like reaching for the gold ring, which is you. Nikki, you are my gold ring. So maybe I will fall off the goddamn carousel, but I have to reach for you, right? I want to see you. I want to talk to you face-to-face. Just once. Afterward, if you never want to see me again, I can live with that. Just give me one chance to show you how much I have changed. Just one chance. One face-to-face meeting. Please. Society and Technology free essay sample
When a law enforcement agency becomes stagnant, it ceases to be effective. The effort to stay abreast of these advances in technology is a continuous effort. It Is the responsibly of the department trainers and leaders to ensure the officers are kept up to date. As society becomes more and more technologically advanced, so do the criminals. It would be impossible to fully describe all the technological advances available to counteract criminal and crime. Only two will be discussed in this paper. The Office of Law Enforcement Technology Centralization (OWLET) has developed a 3-D facial recognition program which Is designed to augment current airport security cameras enhancing law enforcements ability to apprehend terrorists. This company Is currently In the process of collecting private companies to develop and market the software. The software, call Integrated Law Enforcement Face-Identification System (OLEFINS), uses two dimensional images from police mug shots and a profile image to create a three dimensional graphic. We will write a custom essay sample on Society and Technology or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The finished images should make criminal investigation easier for police officers and eliminate much of the guess work In identification. Currently this program Is still In the development stage and It may be some time In the mean time, the developers at OWLET seeking a private company or firm which would be willing to improve the existing software and acquire a license. Arise Erasers, chief scientist of the OLEFINS project, recently stated that he and his associates wish to get it out of the door as soon as we can. Erasers is realistic and explained that the applications must be focused on the needs of law enforcement.Any firm or company wishing to market the software must understand and agree to this desire. Many identification software programs currently exist and have been in use by law enforcement agencies for many years. For example, a drivers license photograph can be used by police officers to identify and locate a potential suspect. These photographs are two dimensional and require the officer to view two separate images, a front and side view. This is a tedious and time consuming method. Depending on the size of the database, thousands of photos would have to be compared. In addition, because security cameras are able to capture images from any angle, a positive identification from two separate two dimensional images would be difficult and unreliable. Dry Erasers and the other researchers at OWLET wish to simplify this effort, making it easier for officers make identifications while simultaneously reducing the time spent searching existing databases. Three dimensional images would allow police officers to match suspect photographs or images taken from any angle. The software would then compare them with an existing database to create an image of the suspect from the same angle. The images would be compared with the database and any possible matches would be clearly seen. This will allow for quicker recessing of the data and reduce the margin for error. Several companies are current considering this product. Another technology has been recently developed to assist law enforcement officers in the effort to locate and apprehend criminals. This technology requires the use off police helicopter. Helicopter officers usually have to have a map book within reach then visually compare it with the local terrain (streets) in order to achieve the proper orientation. This takes time and often hinders the effort to locate and assist in the capture of fleeing suspects. Mark Gassy, president of Rare Computers located in Oxnard California, has developed an answer to this dilemma. Gassy has developed a new computer mapping tool which would virtually eliminate the trial and error guess work of helicopter navigation. The mapping tool would increase accuracy, safety and reduce the response time dramatically. It also provides vital emergency information to the pilot. SST Derek Dummied of the SST.Louis County Police Helicopter Unit believes this product is a major enhancement and beneficial to the unit. He stated In the past, we loud waste two minutes trying to figure out where we are and where we need to go. He added that the program improves a police helicopters response time by 40 percent. This mapping program enables a pilot or his observer to get instant directions by simply entering address into the interface. In addition to the location, an estimated time of arrival is calculated. It allows the crews to quickly locate and identify streets, This allows pursuits to be better controlled and safer.Using both his pilot and computer engineering skills, Gassy developed this yester in 1994. He spent a year flying with Los Angels County Sheriffs Office and experienced the frustration and inaccuracy of map book navigation. This system allows them to do the police work without having to do all the navigating, Gassy said. Instead of being the last one to the scene, they are the first. The preceding examples are only two of a multitude of advanced technologies which are available to law enforcement. It is important that police agencies are aware of these advancements and stay abreast of the technologies involved. They just consider the need and application of these enhancements and well as consider the practical application for their perspective department. 5 Illegal Interview Questions and How to Deal with Them
5 Illegal Interview Questions and How to Deal with Them When it comes to job interviews, honesty (okay, maybe enhanced honesty in some cases) is the way to go. But what if the interviewer is asking you questions they have no right to ask? Out of ignorance or slyness, an interviewer might try to get information out of you that the company is not allowed to factor into their hiring decisions. However, youââ¬â¢re not obligated to answer them- and in fact you shouldnââ¬â¢t. Your battle plan should be to figure out why theyââ¬â¢re asking (whether it has direct consequences for the job itself), and to decide whether you should answer. In most cases, the answer is ââ¬Å"no,â⬠but there are ways to redirect the conversation and/or call attention to the inappropriateness of the question without alienating the interviewer. After all, it may just be someone talking off the cuff without realizing itââ¬â¢s actually illegal to talk about certain personal issues. Some of the hardest interview questions youââ¬â¢ll encounter might be illegal. Here are some examples of illegal interview question areas, and how to get around them.1. Religion/Race/Sexual OrientationDo you volunteer with your church? Thatââ¬â¢s an interesting last name, whatââ¬â¢s your background? These questions all sound pretty harmlessâ⬠¦just making small talk, right? Yet each one gives away information known as ââ¬Å"protected class.â⬠Employers are prohibited by federal and state law from hiring (or not hiring) based on categories like race or ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. Talking about topics like your church (or lack thereof), your spouse, or your familyââ¬â¢s ethnic background can give information that could tip the interviewer against you if thereââ¬â¢s a bias involved. Even if it happens in a pre-interview chat, before you get down to the brass tacks of the job itself, youââ¬â¢ve given information that the interviewer had no real right to ask.The way to handle this is to redirect the question. If you r efuse to answer, even though youââ¬â¢re in the right, it could set you up as ââ¬Å"combativeâ⬠or disagreeable in the eyes of the interviewer. Itââ¬â¢s okay to be vague and try to channel the conversation elsewhere. On church activity: I do volunteer at my local soup kitchen- I like to give back to the community when I can. On family background: Gotta love the American melting pot, right? 2. AgeYou have a pretty long and distinguished resume, do you see yourself retiring soon? Age (particularly 40 and up) is another protected class. If an interviewer tries to get information about how old you are, he or she might be trying to suss out whether youââ¬â¢re likely to be a long-time employee at the companyâ⬠¦or whether this job is a pit stop on your way to the golf course. You should never feel obligated to give your age. Instead, take the chance to re-emphasize your commitment to the job for which youââ¬â¢re interviewing: On the contrary, Iââ¬â¢m looking forward to talking about a long and productive relationship with this company, and bringing the fruits of that experience to my work for a long time to come.3. Family StatusIf youââ¬â¢re pregnant, have children, or may want children some dayâ⬠¦doesnââ¬â¢t matter. An interviewer is not allowed to use your family status as part of the hiring decision. Even if youââ¬â¢re eight months pregnant in your interview suit, he or she canââ¬â¢t ask when youââ¬â¢re due, or about your childcare plan afterward. In a case like this, the best tactic is to try to push it back on the asker. Without being overly antagonistic, itââ¬â¢s okay to ask, Can you help me understand why that matters? I just want to make sure I better understand what this job entails.4. Whether Youââ¬â¢ve Been ArrestedConvictions are fair game for interviewers and job applications, but arrests (without convictions) are not. Even thatââ¬â¢s starting to change in some places: New York is looking at phasing out e mployersââ¬â¢ ability to ask about particular kinds of convictions. For now, however, convictions are askable, but arrests are not.If youââ¬â¢re asked, have a simple response ready to go (taking too long can trigger the kind of reaction youââ¬â¢re trying to avoid): I have never been convicted of anything, no. And if you do have a conviction, itââ¬â¢s essential to remember not to lie about that, because a background check would likely uncover that information.5. Your Military ServiceI see from your resume that youââ¬â¢re in the National Guard. Does that take up much of your time? Employers are not allowed to use active military service as criteria in hiring. Basically, the interviewer canââ¬â¢t factor in your military service at all. If you choose to answer this one, emphasize that youââ¬â¢ve never had a problem balancing your service with your career.6. Disability StatusIf you donââ¬â¢t mind my asking, how did you get in that wheelchair? Will you be on crutch es long-term? I see you have glasses- is that a pretty strong prescription? The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is pretty clear- employers are not allowed to discriminate against employees that may need physical accommodations. Instead, they are allowed to ask if you would need any specific accommodations to do the job.If it seems like the interviewer is fishing for information about a disability, deflect it. Are you asking whether I would need special accommodations? Or, Iââ¬â¢m not sure I see how this relates to my ability to analyze sales reports- can you clarify and help me understand? The most important thing to remember is that if you feel uncomfortable, you donââ¬â¢t have to answer- but you also donââ¬â¢t have to disqualify yourself by putting up a defensive wall or walking out of the interview. Itââ¬â¢s fine to call attention to the reasons behind asking (in as non-confrontational a way as you can manage), then try to segue back to the interview and job desc ription as quickly as possible. If you have concerns about any of the areas outlined here, definitely check with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and know your rights as an applicant.

Cell Phones Essays - Radiobiology, Mobile Telecommunications
Cell Phones Essays - Radiobiology, Mobile Telecommunications Cell Phones What Causes Cell Phone Radiation and How Does it Effect Your Body? What is so popular with young teenagers today? Cell phones. Walking around on campus to walking around at the mall with your cell phone may seem fashionable and trendy, but did you now that it might be causing you to get a cancer? Ninety percent of cell phone holders do not realize it and it should be something everyone should be aware of. It may seem a bit unusually how a cell phone can cause a child or an adult to get cancer, but it is true. New evidence is growing fast about health risks from mobile phones electromagnetic radiation. These devices can be used to make telephone calls from almost anywhere. Symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, burning sensations on the skin were more common among those who make longer phone calls. At the same time there are a growing number of unconfirmed reports of individuals whose health has been affected after chronic, frequent use of mobile phones, presumably from radiation effects on cell. There are two types of phones, one has the antenna mounted on the handset and the other has the antenna mounted on a separate transmitter or, if the telephone is installed in a vehicle, mounted on the roof or rear window. Communication between a mobile telephone and the nearest base station is achieved by the microwave emissions from the antenna. Concerns have been raised about the type of mobile telephone that has the antenna in the handset. In this case, the antenna is very close to the user's head during normal use of the telephone and there is concern about the level of microwave emissions to which the brain is being exposed. Those telephones that have the antenna mounted elsewhere are of no concern, since exposure levels decrease rapidly with increasing distance from the antenna. Cordless telephones, which need to be operated within about 20 meters of a base unit that is connected directly to the telephone system do not have any health concerns associated with their use because exposure levels are very low. . Media reports have claimed that up to 70 percent of the microwave emissions from hand- held mobile telephones may be absorbed in the user's head. This is not supported by the evidence, but nevertheless leads to speculation that hot spots may be created in the user's brain, thereby raising concerns that the telephones may be a health risk. Other reports have indicated that mobile telephone users suffer localized headaches when they use their telephone. At this stage, it is difficult to evaluate the evidence supporting these reports, since they have not been published. This work on human subjects follows other phone studies in animals suggesting that radiation from mobiles may cause brain tumors, cancer, anxiety, memory loss and serious birth defects. An Australian study found that mice exposed to pulsed digital phone radiation over 18 months had twice the risk of developing cancers. An American study found that learning and short term memory were impaired after 45 minutes exposure to radiation from phones in rats. And other studies of electromagnetic radiation on pregnant mice suggest that high exposure can affect intra-uterine development, confirmed recently in chicks. The effects in humans are unknown. In Britain a 27 year old woman with a brain tumor is taking a mobile phone manufacturer to court who she blames for her tumor. A biologist, Roger Coghill has also been given permission to bring a case against a provider of mobile phone equipment for failing to warn people of radiation hazards. A wide variety of electrical devices contribute to electro smog, ranging from computers, to phones, TV sets, radar transmitter and transformers. However mobile phone radiation is certainly intense, as evidenced by the effects on aircraft navigation systems, or more obviously on a nearby conventional telephone or a music system The brain cancer reports originated in the USA where a number of lawsuits have been lodged against mobile telephone manufacturers and suppliers. These claims for damages allege that the microwave emissions from mobile telephones used by the claimants caused their brain cancers. Those few cases that have been tried have been dismissed for lack of supporting evidence.

WK2_mketing_VALS - Essay Example The survey results will show the main features of a customer: conservative or liberal, intellectual or a working man, prefer innovation or stick to old products. Translating marketing information into intelligence requires three related general functions: surveillance, assessment, and prediction. This activity consists of observing the reports of marketing occurrences, discerning patterns and deviations from standards, and trying to make sense out of them. Surveillance serves two ends: it indicates likely trends and changes in the marketplace and then suggests what must be known and done to meet the changes. Assessment attempts to evaluate more specific knowledge of particular opportunities, or competitors capabilities and vulnerabilities. Knowledge of strengths and weaknesses of specific competitors supplies the basis for developing ones own marketing strategies and programs. Predictions provide a dimension of futurity that makes intelligence relevant for planned decisions. The surv ey shows that the company has area intelligence, which is concerned more with localized details and shorter-run aspects of the marketing-activities programs. It is of particular value to marketing personnel in specialized or functional areas, since they deal directly with operations but lack policymaking responsibility. For example, area intelligence guides the actual recruitment, selection, training, and direction of salesmen; the determination of specific prices and advertising programs; and the specification of product qualities (Paley, 87). The survey results will show a need in new products and designs and ability of customers to perceive innovations. The survey will determine the character of a consumer and his life style. Both the quality of the raw data and the effectiveness of the primary analysis determine the kind of marketing information that will be derived. Data must be sorted, classified,

HR Administration - Essay Example Ownership is the key distinction of privatization according to this focused definition of privatization (Klingner et al, 2010). Privatization is viewed as an option for providing services to the community and the decision to privatize should be made by the government reflecting the government to deliver public goods and services by the private sector creates a balanced evaluation of the financial and non-financial issues with the needs of the community.Market-based competition basis. Privatization is characterized by little involvement by the government and collaborating with private service providers. Government stops providing a service directly and relies on the private sector to deliver the service (Klingner et al, 2010). Human resource managers are facing an imminent mass exodus of senior workers, the likes of which has never been seen before. These workers will need to be replaced due to death or retirement. Some organizations might lose up to 50% of their seniors in the next two to three years. This exit will strain the governmental entitlement programs, company benefit, pension plans, and press the concern on empty chairs in offices across the nation. The smaller size of Generation X (25 ââ¬â 38- year-olds) along with their high rate of turnover and the transitory nature of their work force lately will lead to a shrinking pool of replacements and competition for those employees will increase. Demographic realities seem to suggest a possible shortage of labor in the coming decades (Klingner et al, 2010). Many Boomers will maintain their positions after their typical retirement age due to longer life expectancy. The likelihood of new legislation increasing the age for Social Security benefits, the high costs in living, recent losses in pension and IRA accounts attached to the stock market could make older employees delay their
